Data-centric optical networks and their survivability

چکیده
The explosive growth of data-traffic, for example due to the popularity of the Internet, poses important emerging network requirements on today’s telecommunication networks. This paper describes how core networks will evolve to Optical Transport Networks (OTNs), which are optimised for the transport of data-traffic, resulting in a IP-directly-over-OTN paradigm. Special attention is paid to the survivability of such data-centric optical networks. This becomes more and more crucial, since more and more traffic is multiplexed onto a single fiber (e.g, 160*10Gbps), implying that a single cable cut can affect incredible large traffic volumes. More in particular, this paper is tackling multi-layer survivability problems, since a data-centric optical network consists of at least an IP and optical layer. In practice, this means that the questions “in which layer or layers to provide survivability” and “if multiple layers are chosen for this purpose, then how to coordinate this functionality in these layers” have to be answered. In addition to a theoretical study, some case studies are presented in order to illustrate the relevance of the described issues and to help in strategic planning decisions. Two case studies are studying the problem from a capacity viewpoint. Another case study presents simulations from a timing/throughput performance viewpoint.

A Multi Objective Graph Based Model for Analyzing Survivability of Vulnerable Networks
In the various fields of disaster management, choosing the best location for the Emergency Support & Supply Service Centers (ESSSCs) and the survivability of the network that provides the links between ESSSCs and their environment has a great role to be paid enough attention. This paper introduces a graph based model to measure the survivability of the linking's network. By values computed for ...
متن کاملTrends in Survivability Techniques of Optical Networks
The ability of a network to continue functioning even after the occurrence of any failure is very much required in optical networks. As optical networks are capable of transmitting a large amount of data at very high speed, so any failure or breakdown even for small duration can cause significant data and revenue loss. So the survivability of optical networks has become very important issue for...
متن کاملA survey of survivability in multi-domain optical networks
Network survivability is becoming an important issue and a topical subject in WDM optical mesh networks. Many works have studied network survivability. However, few works have focused on survivability in multi-domain optical networks. This paper reviews the literature on survivability against failures in multi-domain optical networks. The main objective of this study is to evaluate and analyze ...
متن کاملSurvivability of IP over WDM Background on Network Survivability
In this article we investigate the problem of restoration scheme for IP over WDM networks. Network reliability gains importance with the huge volume of traffic carried by such networks. Providing survivability at the optical layer is inherently attractive, but raises many questions and challenges, given the characteristic of optical aggregated lightpath and relatively coarse traffic granularity...
متن کاملOptimal Coding Subgraph Selection under Survivability Constraint
Nowadays communication networks have become an essential and inevitable part of human life. Hence, there is an ever-increasing need for expanding bandwidth, decreasing delay and data transfer costs. These needs necessitate the efficient use of network facilities. Network coding is a new paradigm that allows the intermediate nodes in a network to create new packets by combining the packets recei...
